The University of North Carolina Semester in Washington

East Carolina University is one of 14 universities in the UNC system participating in the University of North Carolina Semester in Washington Program.  This exciting program began Summer Term 2005.  Each summer, fall and spring term three students from East Carolina join students from our sister institutions to live, work, and learn in the nation's capital.

The students who participate in the UNC in Washington program register as fulltime students on their home campuses, live, work, and learn in Washington, D.C., widely regarded as the political capital of the world and the center of government and commerce.

ECU students interested in participating in the Semester in Washington should:

  • Read the information provided concerning UNC in Washington
  • Determine if they meet the eligibility requirements
  • Meet with their advisors to determine how participation in this program can fit into their academic plan of study
  • Talk with the East Carolina UNC in Washington Program Campus Coordinator (2307 and 2309 Old Cafeteria Complex.)
  • Complete the Application (available on the web or from our office) and submit it to 2309 Old Cafeteria Complex.

The ECU Washington Experience Advisory Committee reviews applications and selects three participants and three alternates for each term.  Recommendations from departments are very important in this process.  Students can apply as early as three terms in advance indicating their term of preference.  Early submissions will be considered by the committee. The UNC in Washington Site Director will assist selected students in obtaining their internship placements. Students whose departments already have a placement can request use of those placements.

The students who participate in the UNC in Washington program live and work in Washington, D.C.  In addition to its magnificent federal structures and national monuments, Washington is a lively cultural center with a rich mix of art, music and theatre.  Washington's dynamic professional environment and vibrant multicultural atmosphere offer students a vast array of opportunities to expand their career, academic, and personal goals.
