NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

ITCS Team Honored With Computerworld Award

ECU Data Storage Team saves $$$ by implementing innovative technology

ECU’s Data Storage team has been recognized as a Laureate by the Computerworld Honors Program.  “I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of the dedicated staff in Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) whose hard work is being recognized on a national level,” said Joe Norris, Chief Technology Officer for ECU.

The Computerworld Honors Program unites Chairmen and CEOs of the world’s foremost information technology companies to recognize the most outstanding user achievements in technology each year.  This year’s award highlights ECU’s efforts in the area of data storage and server consolidation.  By using the latest in virtualization technologies, ECU has been able to avoid the construction of a new data center resulting in the saving of millions of dollars.

This year’s Honorees were commemorated during the 20th Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony & Gala Awards Evening on June 2, 2008, in Washington, DC.

Windows XP Updates Coming Soon to Campus Users

Installation for ECU community set for July

Microsoft recently released Service Pack 3 for the Windows XP operating system.  While still being tested by ITCS, Service Pack 3 includes over 1,174 fixes for XP and its installed components.

Once testing is complete, Service Pack 3 will be installed on all campus computers running the Windows XP operating system via Automatic Update.  No intervention on your part should be required.

Home computers running Windows XP should also have Service Pack 3 installed. To download, press Start and click the link to the Windows Update Web site. If you have any questions about Service Pack 3, or you encounter any difficulties with the installation on your campus computer, please contact the IT Help Desk at 328-9866 or visit help.ecu.edu.

Connect Your Students with Course Software for FREE

New online form streamlines request process for Virtual Computing Lab

On-campus and distance education students can now access software used in their courses without having to purchase it themselves, stress about hardware compatibility or even visit the campus computer labs.

Students can simply log in to the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) from home or residence hall and choose software from an image requested for their course. Beginning fall semester, there will also be general purpose images available to students to include Microsoft Office, SAS and SPSS.

To request a VCL image for a class, faculty should submit an electronic form through the Help Desk online request system.  Go to help.ecu.edu and click Submit an Online Request

Log in using your PirateID and passphrase.  This will open the main page.

On the left-hand side of the page, look in the third section down (called Request Software) and locate the link labeled Virtual Computing Lab Image Request (the last link in the list).  Clicking this link will open the new form.  Complete the information—items marked with an * are required—and submit.  Be sure to read the VCL terms and conditions.

Requests should be submitted at least two weeks in advance to ensure that software is available.

For more information on the Virtual Computing Lab, go to www.ecu.edu/vcl/

Mac Maintenance
Calibrate your battery and change the password

Did you know Apple recommends calibrating a MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop battery every month or so?

New batteries always need to be calibrated before use. You should also recalibrate the battery every month or so afterward to reset the battery's internal processor.

This ensures you receive an accurate reading of the onscreen time/percentage battery display.

For more information, go to
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2339.html

Is your Macintosh system getting sluggish? Having printing problems?
Are applications opening slowly? Before calling the Help Desk, try running Disk Utility.

1. Quit all open applications.
2. Go to Applications >> Utility Folder and open Disk Utility.
3. On the left side of the window select your drive.
4. On the right in the First Aid tab, click on the Verify Disk button.
5. If everything clears, click on the Repair Disk Permissions button.
6. Quit Disk Utility when done.

How do you change your Macintosh password?

In OS X.4 or X.5, go to the Apple Menu >> System Preferences >> Accounts.
Sselect your account and click on the Change Password button. The Macintosh password is changed manually. It does not change when you change your email password.

SECURITY AND THEFT PREVENTION

Secure Your Laptop
Prevent theft, keep hackers at bay and simple steps to keep computer files safe

The FBI estimates that, after identity theft, the next most common crime is the theft of laptop computers. Generally, laptop theft is a little-publicized crime, unless one is stolen from the government or industry. If its hard drive contains personal or strategic information, it is likely to get front page coverage.

Steps to take to secure your personal laptop:

  • Do not store sensitive data unencrypted on the hard drive.
  • Password protect your boot up process and/or each file on the hard drive.
  • In restaurants, take it with you or have someone watch it if you step away
    from the table.
  • Do not carry your laptop in a common laptop bag that makes its contents obvious.
  • If it is not in use at work, keep it out of view in a locked drawer.
  • If you have to leave it in a vehicle, put it in the trunk before you leave for
    your destination.
  • If you have to leave it out, such as in an office or in a restaurant, utilize the
universal security slot (most laptops have these) with a locking cable, available at computer stores.
  • Keep a list of all model and serial numbers, as well as a backup of the hard drive, in a safe place.
