Assistive Technology Resources

ECU’s goal is equal access for every student

ECU works to provide every student with equal access to all of the university’s technology resources.

To learn which technologies are available, visit the Department of Disability Support Services at www.ecu.edu/dss or dial 737-1016 (Voice/TTY/Relay).  You may also visit DSS in person.  They are located in Slay Building, Room 138.

ECU also boasts an outstanding assistive technology lab whose stated mission is to “…create opportunities for individuals with disabilities, parents, advocates…and others interested in learning how technology can be used to assist individuals in reaching their potential.”

Created by the College of Education’s Special Education Program in 1992, the Irene Howell Assistive Technology Center is an excellent source of expert advice regarding the selection and use of assistive technologies.

For more resources go to www.ecu.edu/educ/ci/sped/at or stop by Rivers Building, Room 128.

Online Bookmarking Offers Convenience and Fun

Access and share your bookmarks plus search what others have found

You’re surfing in your dorm, and—behold—there’s a site with information about your paper topic. You bookmark the site for later and keep looking for more information. You’d like to check out these sites further when you hit the library’s computer lab, but how to do that when they’re saved on your computer? You also find a site about everyone’s favorite band that you’d like to share with your friends—but emailing everybody with a link is a hassle—there’s got to be an easier way!

There is if you subscribe to an online bookmarking service to take advantage of its anytime/anywhere sharing features.

Online bookmarking services conveniently store your bookmarks (or favorites) online where they can be accessed from any computer connected to the Web. It’s also an opportunity to search other members’ interesting finds. Most of the services are free and offer privacy features for those bookmarks you don’t want to share as well as many categories of searchable public links submitted by members on many interesting topics.

Advantages of using an online bookmarking service include:
• Accessing your bookmarks from any computer using the Internet
• Sharing your most interesting Web sites with others
• Searching your favorite topics to find interesting sites others have found

There are many social bookmarking services available, many of which cater to a particular category, such as technology. Among some of the most popular are:

Del.icio.us – http://del.icio.us/about/
Foxmarks – http://www.foxmarks.com
Ma.gnolia – http://ma.gnolia.com
Google Bookmarks – http://www.google.com/bookmarks

TIPS AND HOW-TO'S

Mac Maintenance
Calibrate your battery and change the password

Did you know Apple recommends calibrating a MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop battery every month or so?

New batteries always need to be calibrated before use. You should also recalibrate the battery every month or so afterward to reset the battery's internal processor. This ensures you receive an accurate reading of the onscreen time/percentage battery display.

For more information, go to
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2339.html

Is your Macintosh system getting sluggish? Having printing problems?
Are applications opening slowly? Before calling the Help Desk, try running Disk Utility.

1. Quit all open applications.
2. Go to Applications >> Utility Folder and open Disk Utility.
3. On the left side of the window select your drive.
4. On the right in the First Aid tab, click on the Verify Disk button.
5. If everything clears, click on the Repair Disk Permissions button.
6. Quit Disk Utility when done.

How do you change your Macintosh password? In OS X.4 or X.5, go to
the Apple Menu >> System Preferences >> Accounts, select your account
and click on the Change Password button.

The Macintosh password is changed manually; it does not change when you change your email password.

SECURITY AND THEFT PREVENTION

Secure Your Laptop

Simple steps to prevent theft, keep hackers at bay and safeguard files

The FBI estimates that, after identity theft, the next most common crime is the theft of laptop computers. Generally, laptop theft is a little-publicized crime unless one is stolen from the government or industry. If its hard drive contains personal or strategic information, it is likely to get front page coverage.

Steps to secure your personal laptop:

  • Do not store sensitive data unencrypted on the hard drive.
  • Password protect your boot up process and/or each file on the hard drive.
  • In restaurants, take it with you or have someone watch it if you step away from the table.
  • Do not carry your laptop in a common laptop bag that makes its contents obvious.
  • If it is not in use at work, keep it out of view in a locked drawer.
  • If you have to leave it in a vehicle, put it in the trunk before you leave for
    your destination.
  • If you have to leave it out, such as in an office or in a restaurant, utilize the universal security slot (most laptops have these) with a locking cable, available at computer stores.
  • Keep a list of all model and serial numbers, as well as a backup of the hard drive, in a safe place.
