Academics

The education you will receive and challenges you will face at East Carolina are the kind that exist only in the intellectually charged environment of a national research university. The work is demanding and you will get the best of a liberal arts education, paired with professional programs of national standing and excellence.

The Liberal Arts
The cornerstone of an East Carolina education is a firm grounding in the liberal arts -- courses that develop the intellect and teach flexibility in adapting to an everchanging world. It is the basis for everything else you will learn whether you go on to study in the professional schools or delve further into the arts and humanities, the nature sciences and mathematics, or the social sciences.

Professional Training
East Carolina's professional schools and colleges build on the solid foundation of the liberal arts by offering specialized training in specific areas. The professional schools run the gamut of interests from nationally recognized programs in the fine and performing arts, teacher education, and health care, to practical training in all aspects of business, engineering, industry and technology.

With programs ranging from social work to sculpture and computer science to child life, these schools emphasize hands-on experience, the latest advances, and practical application in addition to classwork and theory. Internships, individual and team projects, and professional development are all important parts of what you learn and how you will learn at East Carolina.

Undergraduate Research Assistantships
Honors students have the chance to work side-by-side with some of East Carolina's top researchers on projects that can vary from chemistry to cartography. This is hands-on experience that goes far beyond what you normally get in an undergraduate classroom. This type of experience is usually limited to graduate students.

Degree in Three Programs
An exceptional opportunity for exceptional students. East Carolina offers intensive programs that will allow you to earn a bachelor's degree in three years. These are demanding programs that require students to maintain a high gpa, and there are no shortcuts. In return, the university guarantees you the classes you need when you need them, and you will be well-prepared for a career or grad school a year earlier. Other accelerated programs such as MD in 7, JD in 6, and DDS in 7 can be found at: http://www.ecu.edu/succeedsooner .

Study Abroad
A semester, a summer, or an academic year spent studying in another country is not just a luxury, it can be a valuable part of your education -- particularly with the demand for workers comfortable in a global environment. You can swap places with a student at more than 100 universities in countries such as Russia, Sweden, Japan, and Chile. A summer study-abroad program taught in English by ECU professors is also available. Australia, Bermuda, Italy, and Austria are some of the recent destinations. For more information please contact the International Admissions Office at 252-328-4829.
