Incoming students will be assigned an advisor to assist in the major exploration process. Professional and faculty advisors endeavor to guide, serve and support students by partnering with academic departments and support services, promote diverse educational experiences, and foster professional success and responsible citizenship.
Students entering East Carolina with a strong academic record may be eligible to compete for opportunities in top programs. We offer a variety of merit scholarship funding,as well as research and study-abroad opportunities, leadership and volunteer experiences, and unique and innovative seminars and colloquia.

At ECU, we believe that a well-educated student should have access to quality undergraduate research and creative opportunities within any field of study. These opportunities will enhance students’ problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. In addition, undergraduate research is an excellent way to give students hands-on experience as scholars in preparation for graduate programs. Students often will be able to receive course credit for independent study projects within their major.
East Carolina has the resources and support to ensure your computing needs are met during your time here. We encourage you to take advantage of our many technology resources. Check e-mail through the Piratemail web interface. Access course work through Blackboard. Check grades on OneStop. Purchase a computer through the ACE student computing support program or software from the Dowdy Student Stores. Visit one of the many campus computer labs. Call on the Student IT Help Desk or RezNet. Conduct research through Joyner Library’s electronic resources.
If you’re an on-campus resident or wireless user, you can safely climb aboard the ECU network through a network authentication process called Connect2ECU, which ensures that all computers are free of threats imposed by viruses and worms and updated with the most recent virus definitions and Windows operating system updates.
From map collections dating back to the 1500s to the latest e-journals and e-books, East Carolina’s J. Y. Joyner Library has a wealth of resources to serve you in your time here and librarians to help you use them. With iPads and laptops available for checkout, comfortable work spaces,and group study rooms available for reserve—as well as more than 1.3 million volumes and wide-ranging collections of manuscripts, maps, and oral histories—Joyner is the central hub of all things academic on campus.
The Pirate Tutoring Center (PTC) provides free tutoring services for ECU students, academic skills workshops, study skills coaching, and academic support to enhance student success. The mission of the center is to help ECU students through peer academic tutoring, academic success strategies, individual assessment and consultations, and outreach initiatives in order to enhance academic performance and success.
