Foundations Area Studios

Studio Policies

Due to the high number of Foundation Students at any one time, it is necessary for students to share studio space. Once accepted into a concentration, individual studio space will be allotted.

It is expected that students will act responsibly in the use of the School of Art facility, equipment and tools.

All cutting must be done on a cutting mat or protected surface. Cutting on exposed counter tops, desks and floors damages those surfaces permanently. Cutting on a cardboard surface such as the back of a sketch pad is adequate and prolongs the life of your blades.

Messes must be cleaned up as you work as well as afterwards. Materials that are taking up shared workspace will be discarded.

The maintenance crew will generally empty trash cans on a nightly basis. Should you fail to find an empty one there is a dumpster outside the West end of the building.

Secure a locker for yourself and clearly label it with your name and the semester & year. You are required to remove your belongings at the end of each spring semester unless you are attending summer school.

Bicycle storage is forbidden in the building by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Hazards Association) If bicycles are found, campus security will remove them.

Do not store projects in the classrooms, they will be thrown out.

There is a designated area for the spray painting of projects. This is in room 108. Any student known to have spray painted in other areas around the building such as on sidewalks, plant areas, walls, etc. will be considered to have vandalized state property and will be sent to the Dean of Students. Don't do it ever!

Jenkins Fine Arts Center is a designated non-smoking area

Radios and tape players must be kept to a volume that does not disturb others.

Safety and Access Considerations

Safety Lecture

During each fall semester OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) make a presentation on basic studio safety in the School of Art. It is required that all students see this presentation. Faculty will notify students of the time and place that the presentation will be made. If it is not possible to attend the presentation at the given time due to a work schedule or class conflict, the entire presentation (less than 1 hr. long) must be viewed on video tape in the media, center. A roll will be taken at the time of the presentation and a sign out sheet made available in the media center for those viewing the video tape.

Access

For safety reasons the art building will be locked after certain hours and during certain holidays. A card access system is in place to prevent unauthorized entry to the building. To receive your entry card, inquire as to procedure in the main office, 2001.

Spray Booths

Do not spray airborne materials like fixatives, adhesives and paint in the building. These materials may be toxic and are often an irritant and should be sprayed only in the booth located in room 108.

Blades

Dispose of knife blades properly by wrapping the sharp edge with tape. Improper disposal could mean injuries to others.

Ventilation

Read labels on art materials and use according to instruction for safe application. Follow all rules and regulations. Safety Ventilation Fans must be turned on during studio use where they are available. All chemicals should be disposed of properly according to OSHA approved procedures.

Sinks

Keep the sinks free of paper towels and other debris. Never let plaster dust or sludge go down the drains, they will clog and be costly to repair.

Food

It is not advisable to eat in the studios. Chemical contamination is possible along with the risk of damaging work and property.

Theft

Keep your materials and equipment locked away, things left out are not safe from theft.

Blood Spills

Do not wipe up blood spills. In the case of any accident resulting in loss of blood, notify a faculty member. If the injury is slight, it is expected that the injured party will clean up his or her own blood.
