Summer Program for Future Doctors

Purpose

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (BSOM) is committed to educating primary care physicians, making medical care more readily available to the people of eastern North Carolina, and providing opportunities to minority and disadvantaged students. It is also the commitment of BSOM to offer encouragement and opportunities for the training of premedical students. The Academic Support and Enrichment Center, in affiliation with BSOM, sponsors an intensive, challenging, educational summer program that allows participants to experience the pedagogical style and demands of the medical school curriculum. The Summer Program for Future Doctors (SPFD) includes:

  • A demanding academic medical curriculum with over 220 hours of Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Neuroscience and Physiology.
  • 32 hours of learning and study skills, strategies for increasing reading power, which help students become more effective and efficient learners.
  • 24 hours of orienting students to the community and social aspects of the health care environment with topics such as verbal, nonverbal, communication, interviewing skills, medical ethics, moral reasoning, medicine and the law, and diversity.
  • 32 hours of exposing students to the style, format, and content of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) with didactic instruction in specific areas (biology, chemistry and physics) and a simulated MCAT administration.
  • 10 hours of learning opportunities for students to witness medicine in action, observe procedures, and develop relationships with staff at primary care sites within the community and BSOM Outpatient Clinics.

Matriculating Program

The Matriculating program is geared toward medical students who have already been accepted to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University for the following semester. The program includes:

  • a demanding academic curriculum of medical studies with 170 hours of Physiology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, and 120 hours of Gross Anatomy.
  • 32 hours of learning and student study skills, test-taking skills, strategies for increasing reading power, medical terminology, centers on strategies designed to help students become more effective and efficient learners
  • opportunities for students to witness medicine in action, observe procedures, and participate in various community / clinical opportunities
  • a great opportunity for participants to strengthen their basic science knowledge base, enhance their critical thinking skills, to gain a better understanding of the curriculum and to begin to make adjustment to the academic, social, and emotional demands of medical school.

In summary, the SPFD is a great opportunity for participants to strengthen their basic science knowledge base, enhance their critical thinking skills, gain a better understanding of the application and admission process, and exhibit their abilities to successfully handle the academic, social, and emotional demands of medical school.
