Statement of East Carolina Board of Trustees regarding the name of Charles B. Aycock residence hall:
"The East Carolina University Board of Trustees has decided to transition the name of Charles B. Aycock from the residence hall to include it in Heritage Hall, which soon will be developed on campus.
Heritage Hall will be a new learning and teaching area which will allow the university to acknowledge and recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to ECU.
This hall will include founders and other leaders who were influential in our growth and maturity as a University. We believe that Aycock’s legacy to education will be better served represented in the overall history of ECU in Heritage Hall.
The name will be transitioned as soon as Heritage Hall is developed. Work will begin immediately on a timeline. In this place, Aycock and others can be recognized with an appropriate explanation of his or her contribution and connection to the University's history.
The board thanks all who provided feedback during this review process – students, faculty, staff, alumni and others. We respect the new awareness and appreciation that have been gained by open discussion of values and legacies that impact our past, present and future. While it has been a long process, we believe that we have arrived at the right decision for East Carolina University, one that supports our mission, vision and values.
