The 2011-2012 academic year marks the third year that Dr. John Franklin has served as the Director of Athletic Bands at East Carolina University. Prior to his appointment at ECU, he served at the University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA) where he directed the athletic bands and the symphonic band in addition to teaching courses in music education and applied tuba/euphonium. Dr. Franklin also served a year as the interim director of bands and visiting assistant professor of music education at the College of Wooster (Wooster, OH).

In addition to his duties as the director of the Marching Pirates, Dr. Franklin currently teaches courses in wind conducting and literature, marching band techniques, music education and conducts both the symphonic band and basketball pep band. Franklinís scholarship interests include the training of music teachers, particularly in the area of undergraduate instrumental conducting education, and the history and literature of the wind ensemble. His work has been published in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series and his transcriptions have been performed by the bands at Indiana University, the College of Wooster and the University of West Georgia. As a conductor, he has garnered the praise of composers such as Donald Freund, Jack Gallagher and Michael Gandolfi for the thoughtful and musical preparation and interpretation of their works. Furthermore, he has been invited to guest conduct several regional honor bands as well as the renowned United States Military Academy Band at West Point.

Dr. Franklin completed his DM in Wind Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. He holds a Master of Music Education also from Indiana University and the Bachelor of Music Education from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
