EXCITING NEWS: East Carolina University has been named a Silver Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) by the League of American Bicyclists! With the announcement of 33 new and renewing BFUs in 20 states, East Carolina University joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities from across the United States transforming their campuses and the communities around them. There are now 100 BFUs in 37 states and Washington, D.C.

"Campus leaders are recognizing the real-time and long term impact that a culture of bicycling can create," said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. "We applaud this new round of colleges and universities for investing in a more sustainable future for the country and a healthier future for their staff, students and surrounding communities."

In working with the Master Plan, East Carolina University has made great strides in developing a safer environment for our pedestrians and bicyclists with the closure of roads throughout the heart of campus and the construction of our beautiful new bike paths that run from Wright Circle to Joyner Library. Over the next several years, we will continue to encourage bicycling as an easy option for transportation. We will implement more amenities such as Sharrows, covered bike racks, more bike paths and extensions to the Greenway. For a more detailed list of upcoming projects, please feel free to view East Carolina University's Campus Bicycle Master Plan on this website: http://www.ecu.edu/bikes/bikemasterplan.html. Moving forward, East Carolina University will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. When colleges and universities invest in bicycling, great things happen: decreased carbon foot print, reduced health care costs, connection to the community and a fun and healthy campus culture.
