The Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) believes the composition of its faculty members should reflect the patients and medical learners they serve. To achieve this end, recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty members of color and women faculty have been identified as an institutional priority. The INSPRE program (INclusion, Support, Professional development, Retention, Enrichment) has been created to assist in achieving this priority.
Participants for this program are selected by department chairs and include high-potential faculty targeted for retention by the school. Faculty development program activities take place throughout the academic year addressing topics such as large group presentation skills for medical meetings, time management, effective networking, negotiation and career management. Activities will be skill-based in format, and evaluation will measure skill realization. Also included are scheduled peer mentoring sessions where participants gain valuable advice from senior faculty. Program content is overseen by an Advisory Committee.
Participants are also encouraged to complete the Certificate in Medical Education program offered by East Carolina University and achieve Master Educator status at Brody School of Medicine. Participants will be expected to contribute as teachers in the program as deemed appropriate by the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and the Advisory Committee.
The INSPRE program is evaluated based on participant career-based metrics and satisfaction and overall program effectiveness. Assessment of the program will include evaluation of material presented, documentation, program support, content, academic productivity, career satisfaction and advancement, and retention of faculty participants within East Carolina University.
