Job-related liability insurance is offered on a voluntary basis for professional members of the teaching, research, or extension staff. Academic department heads and deans are also eligible for this insurance, but top administrators are not. If coverage is desired, it is the responsibility of each individual to examine liability exposures and contact the Benefits Department of Human Resources for rates, applications, and additional information.
This optional insurance provides specific coverage for liability exposures arising out of activities involving bodily injury and property damage, defense expense, and personal injury. Personal injury includes false arrest, detention or imprisonment, or malicious prosecution, libel, slander, defamation, or violation or right of privacy, wrongful entry or eviction, or other invasion(s) of right or private occupancy.
The term "activities" means acts or omissions in connection with occupation as a professional member of the teaching or research faculty or staff while employed by East Carolina University. Included are lab instructors, technicians, athletic personnel and all other occupations not specifically excluded.
Coverage is not extended while operating any motor vehicle. Also not covered are exposures associated with aircraft, watercraft, nuclear energy, and contractual or malpractice liability resulting from consulting work away from campus. Personal injury coverage excludes willful violation, protection against legal action by fellow employees and some exposures arising from published materials.
There is not University blanket liability for graduate students, interns, social work students, student researchers and persons pursuing off-campus training at other institutions. Liability insurance for these persons must be obtained individually, or as a group, if a University department has arranged a group policy through the Risk Management Section of the University Property Office.
