Policy Statement 28: Purchase of Live Animals for Research

Federal Regulations

Federal regulations require certain animals such as cats, dogs, monkeys and other large animals to be shipped, housed and handled in accordance with specified rules. The University, at present, has facilities for these types of animals in the Department of Comparative Medicine on the medical campus.

Rodents

Rodent animals are not covered by the same Federal regulations as other animals; and, accordingly, these may be ordered following normal purchasing procedure.

Sole-Source Procurement

Since acquisition of animals cannot be based on competitive bidding according to standard specifications, the Department of Materials Management authorized purchase orders to be issued to various vendors on a sole-source basis.

School of Medicine Purchases

All animals ordered for use in the School of Medicine must be ordered via the Department of Comparative Medicine.
