Safety
Provided below is a list of safety tips that can Empower you to make campus a more secure environment. These tips are provided by Campus Living to ensure that all residents and students are educated concerning fire safety.
 
  1. Report any fire at once.
  2. Evacuate your residence hall or building as quickly as possible when the fire alarm sounds.
  3. Advise staff or fire personnel, as soon as possible, of any student or guest that may need assistance in evacuating the residence hall.
  4. Be aware of the location of fire exits for your floor and residence hall.
  5. Close the door to your room when leaving for a fire alarm, but leave the door unlocked for fire personnel to search the residence hall for any trapped residents.
  6. Do not use any elevator in case of a fire.
  7. Remain in your designated safe exterior area until the fire department or safety personnel allow you to re-enter your residence hall.
  8. Be aware of the fire alarm pull stations on your hall and in your residence hall.
  9. Know the location of the fire extinguishers on your hall.
  10. Do not tamper with fire extinguishers, detectors, sensors, information or fire alarm pull stations.
  11. Report vandalism of fire extinguishers or other fire equipment.
  12. Do not use electrical drop cords in your room or residence hall.
  13. Use only safety fused surge protectors with an off/on switch and not power strips.
  14. Do not cover or obstruct your smoke detector.
  15. Report power outages that occur.
  16. Candles are not permitted in student rooms or resident halls.
  17. Open flame devices such as incense, propane stoves and gas or charcoal grills are not allowed in any room, residence hall or breezeway, except cigarette lighters and matches, and only in tobacco use halls.
  18. Electric frying pans, open coils (including hot plates), oil lamps, halogen lamps, electric or kerosene heaters, deep fat cookers and cooking grease are prohibited in any residence hall.
  19. Fireworks or explosive materials are not allowed in any residence hall.
  20. Gasoline in any amount and other flammable liquids in the same class are prohibited from all residence halls.
  21. All appliances for use in your living space or residence hall must be on the approved list referenced in your resident handbook.
  22. Use only UL labeled appliances.
  23. No more than 50% of any wall in your room may be covered with fabric or paper.
  24. Follow fire safety guidelines published by Campus Living.
