This year's UNC CAUSE logo is derived from New Bern’s historical mother-daughter relationship with the town of Bern, Switzerland. The flag with the bear motif has been dated back to the Middle Ages and is now on display in the city’s courthouse. The original flag was given to the city of New Bern by residents of Bern, Switzerland, back in 1896.

New Bern is North Carolina’s second oldest city, and was settled by a group Swiss and German adventurers led by Baron Christopher de Graffenried of Bern, Switzerland in 1710.

The centerpiece of this historic city is the beautifully restored home of Governor William Tryon (Tryon Palace and Gardens), which was built in 1770.

Another staple of New Bern is its history as the birthplace of Pepsi. In 1898, at Bradham's Pharmacy, Caleb Bradham created what was then known as Brad's Drink. He later purchased the name "Pep Cola" from a company in New Jersey and soon changed the name to "Pepsi Cola."
