College of Human Ecology Requirements to Declare a Major

If you have met the criteria listed below for your intended major, then you should email or meet with your academic advisor. He/she will make sure you have met the requirements and will help you declare your major. To view the criteria, click your intended major below.

  • Interior Design
  • Merchandising
  • Nutrition Science
  • Social Work
  • Birth through Kindergarten (BK)
    • 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher Education (FACS)
    • 2.5 cumulative GPA
 
  • Family and Community Services (FCS)
    • 2.5 cumulative GPA
    • Application is required
 
  • Child Life (CL)
    • 3.0 cumulative GPA
    • Essay is required.
 
  • Completion of JUST 1000 with a “C” or better
  • 32 hours at ECU
  • 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Completion of HMGT 1350 with a “C” or better
  • 2.0 overall GPA

 

Prior to 2010 catalog

  • IDSN 1180, 1181, 1281, 1500 (minimum of “C”).
    • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.
  • Courses required before portfolio review: IDSN 1180, 1181, 1281, 1500, 2040, 2800, 2850 and ART 1905.
    • Minimum grade of “C” required in all IDSN courses.
    • 2.5 overall GPA to submit portfolio.
IDSN 2700, 2750 and 2040 are not required for portfolio review but
it is recommended that they are taken before. Often there are schedule conflicts with professional level classes if these are taken after the
review.

Beginning 2010-2011 catalog

  • Courses required to declare and before portfolio review: IDSN 1180, 1181, 1281, 1500, 2800 and ART 1905.
    • Minimum grade of "C" required in all IDSN courses.
    • 2.5 Overall GPA to submit portfolio.
IDSN 2700, 2750 and 2040 are not required for portfolio review but it is recommended that they are taken before. Often there are schedule conflicts with professional level classes if these are taken after the review.

  • MRCH 1135, Math 1065 with a minimum of “C” or better

Prior to 2010-2011 catalog
  • Complete the foundation curriculum requirements with a C in all courses and at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. To continue in the program students must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
  • Required foundation curriculum courses are:

    • CHEM 1150, 1151
    • CHEM 1160, 1161
    • PSYC 1000, SOCI 2110, ECON 2113, COMM 2410 or COMM 2420 is required

Beginning 2010-2011 catalog  
  • All core classes, cognate classes and foundations curriculum classes listed below must be completed with a C or higher. To declare a major in Nutrition Science, students must complete all cognate classes with a C or higher and have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.

    • CHEM 1160, 1161
    • PSYC 1000, SOCI 2110, ECON 2113
    • COMM 2410 OR 2420
    • MATH 1065
  • Required Cognate Courses

  • Complete at least 32 hours
  • 2.5 overall GPA
  • SOCW 1010 and 2010 with a 2.5 GPA in these courses.
