Child Development & Family Relations
Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center
|
The department has been offering early education and care to young children and their families as part of the education and training of its students for over 70 years. The center was officially named the Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center in April 2012 in honor of our alumna, Mrs. Nancy Whitfield Darden who was an avid supporter of children and programs for building strong families. A scholarship in early childhood education was also established in her name. |

The Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center (CDC) is an early childhood education program in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations (CDFR) at East Carolina University (ECU). The goals of the CDC are to serve as a model training laboratory for students majoring in child development and birth through kindergarten (BK) teacher education; to provide inclusive early education and quality care for infants, toddlers, and preschool children; and to provide research opportunities for students and faculty. The Nancy W. Darden CDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and maintains a five-star rated childcare license from the Division of Child Development, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. |

The Nancy Darden CDC provides high quality childcare and education for children ages three months to five years old, which represents a broad cultural and educational mixture of families within the university community and neighboring communities. In addition, the CDC is a Developmental Day Center which provides services to children with disabilities. As a model-training site, the CDC provides observation and participation opportunities and supervised internships for undergraduate and graduate students in CDFR. CDFR faculty and the CDC staff cooperatively supervise student volunteers and interns. Community and regional childcare providers are welcome to observe and consult with the faculty. We encourage you to become involved in CDC activities and to become advocates for young children. |
