Working with children, adolescents and families

If you want to work with children and families and study with a diverse department of talented, caring, and high quality faculty, come to East Carolina University where many opportunities exist for you to actually work with children and families while completing your degree. Students in this program are encouraged to participate in collaborative research projects with faculty, other students or independently; work on community engagement projects as well as volunteer at child and family agencies and organizations. This allows our students to gain valuable professional experience while obtaining their degree.

Our program attracts students who desire careers in child and family services. Students prepare for professional roles in the administration of programs serving children, families, and older adults; in teaching young children; in family life education programming; and in specialized clinical roles in child-life, early intervention, developmental evaluation and other mental health and human service programs. The program also prepares students for advanced studies in doctoral programs.

The CDFR MS program is a flexible program that allows students to specialize in order to further their own career goals. Current students choose a specialization in which they complete in-depth coursework and a research project or thesis. Students are selecting these specializations: community college teaching, gerontology, child life, and child and family services. Graduates of the MS in Child Development and family relations (MS in CDFR) program work in diverse and rewarding careers as follows:
