- Acquire knowledge about and distinguish between typical and atypical development.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the domains of development (physical, intellectual/cognitive, emotional, and social) and their interrelatedness for both typically and atypically developing children.
- Design environments and curricula that are developmentally and functionally appropriate for children from three through five years of age.
- Plan and implement activities that facilitate learning and development of children in all areas: sensorimotor, cognitive, adaptive, language/communication, early literacy, social, aesthetic, emotional, and physical.
- Develop skill in guiding children’s inquiry and discovery as they participate in self-chosen activities.
- Develop skill in fostering self-regulation in children through environmental manipulations (e.g., room arrangement, scheduling) and a variety of guidance strategies (e.g., positive statements, legitimate choices, social problem solving).
- Develop skills in preparing, implementing, and evaluating Individualized Education Plans (IEP) in partnership with the family and agencies or professions that reflect functional developmental goals and objectives for preschool children with disabilities and their families.
- Develop skills in establishing and maintaining effective communication and collaborative relationships with families.
- Develop skills in observing, recording, analyzing, and using date gathered from and abut children engaged in real, concrete, play-oriented activities to assess their learning and acquisition of skills in all domains of development.
- Develop competencies in team building, collaborative consultation, conflict resolution, coordinating services among agencies, and communicating effectively with parents and other professionals.
