Child Development and Family Relations: Student Experiences

One of our goals is for our students to not only gain the education they need to be a successful professional, but also the practical experiences that give them an edge in the professional world. The student experience encompasses not only your time in the classroom, but also your time in the field. The listings below are only a few of the things students may experience while enrolled in programs within the Department of Child Development and Family Relations. Please contact us if you have specific questions concerning the program(s) that are of interest to you.

Child Development Laboratory
The Child Development Laboratory (CDL) is a facility that is used to provide ECU and the Greenville area a five-star childcare center. This laboratory is utilized by faculty and students as well for “hands on” instructional purposes. Dependent upon your degree program and year of study students may be required to student teach in the lab. There are two observation booths containing two way mirrors and monitoring equipment for student observation of real childcare settings. The three separate classrooms consist of an infant, toddler, and preschool age room.  Student’s experiences may vary dependent upon their level of involvement in the lab. Please click here to read what students are saying about their experience(s) in the CDL or visit the Child Development Laboratory webpage for more information.

Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic
The Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic is located just across the street from ECU’s main campus. It acts as a community resource as well as teaching facility. Students interact with clients at many different levels dependent upon the degree program they are enrolled in (undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral). Students come to the MFT for classes, supervision, and clinical work interacting with clients from all walks of life. When enrolled in one of the MFT programs students spend a large portion of their time at the MFT, thus creating a very close relationship with others in the program(s). Please click here to read what students are saying about their experience(s) in the MFT or visit the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic webpage for more information.

Internships, Student Teaching, and Field Experience
Because the programs vary so much in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations there are many different types of internships, students teaching, and field opportunities available to students in our programs. We have student interns in medical, therapeutic, and community service agencies, just to name a few. Some of our programs require students to perform student teaching duties, which may occur in either public school or private center settings. Other field experience opportunities may come in the form of working at or with community agencies, the MFT, the CDL, etc. Please click here to read what students are saying about their experience(s) will working in the field.
