Spencer Barrick ’11, hospitality management, started his own web-based business in Wilmington, N.C., called EyeBar, LLC. EyeBar is a website and iPhone app that streams live video of the action at clubs, restaurants, and bars to the user’s cell phone. These venues pay a monthly subscription to be seen on Eyebar.
Wilmington Downtown, Inc. proclaimed Eyebar the winner of Bootstrap, a competition that promotes technology start-ups. Bootstrap rewarded Spencer with several perks, including free prime office space.
Spencer also plans to stream live video of events, concerts, and festivals to cell phones to entice people to attend. He works with a team of web developers, graphic designers, marketing firms, and ECU hospitality management interns to operate Eyebar.
Spencer says that one of the rewards of starting his own business is that he inspires others to chase their dreams. “People tell me I’m an inspiration to them,” he said. “I believe that anything is possible with a little bit of creativity and drive. I also have the mentality of a Pirate; I like to steer my own ship.”
Spencer is not a newcomer to the hospitality industry or to hard work. He has worked in hotels and restaurants since high school. At ECU, he was an All-American track athlete and a record holding javelin thrower. He was also selected as an Elite Pirate, founding president of Eta Sigma Delta (hospitality management honor society), and a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
