Kristi Forbes ’91, merchandising, is vice president of leasing at AmericasMart, the largest market center in the United States, bringing together wholesalers and retailers worldwide. Kristi is responsible for leasing showroom space to wholesalers in the general gift, resort, gourmet, and house wares industry. Kristi says, “I began at AmericasMart as an ECU intern and volunteered for everything and anything that came along. I just wanted to work, so I took on every new challenge that came my way.”
Kristi believes that learning to run a business through economic ups and downs is one way ECU graduates can be successful in merchandising and other related industries. She urges students to complete an internship during their last semester and establish a strong professional presence on LinkedIn, Facebook, or blogs. “Because the merchandising industry is so far-reaching,” she says, “researching companies, visiting cities with more job opportunities, and subscribing to industry-specific publications also serve graduates well.”
Kristi had some of the best times of her life at ECU, and has carried her college experience forward and turned it into an exciting, ever-evolving career.
