Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management

The hospitality management program will prepare you for successful professional practice through a foundations curriculum courses, specialized course work in foodservice and lodging management, and a minor in business administration. The curriculum is designed to provide a foundation through theory and research as well as opportunities to apply classroom learning in both practice and professional settings. For example, through your courses in food and beverage management and quantity food production, you will learn principles and practices for managing foodservice operations and then apply this knowledge in planning, preparing, and serving meals in a restaurant lab in the Darden Restaurant / Red Lobster Dinning Room. Such on-campus experiences prepare students to compete successfully for excellent internship placements.

Internship and Field Experience
In addition to course work, you will be required to complete a minimum of 400 hours of supervised work experience (NUTR 3990 Field Experience in Lodging). This experience provides you with an opportunity to build your professional skills as well as enhance your job placement opportunities. The work location is mutually agreed upon by you and your faculty supervisor, with your career goals and geographic preferences taken into consideration. Student field experiences have been completed with firms such as Walt Disney World, Red Lobster, Hyatt Regency, Kings Dominion, ARAMARK, and a variety of other hotels and restaurants.

BS/MBA in Five Years
A unique opportunity at East Carolina University is to complete an undergraduate degree in hospitality management and an MBA within just five years.

Advanced degrees increasingly are expected for advancement to higher level management positions in the hospitality industry. Students participating in this accelerated program must maintain good grades, including earning a grade of B or better in all courses in the business administration minor. A separate application to the MBA program is required in the senior year.
