Criminal Justice Careers

The United States system of criminal justice is divided into three areas: law enforcement, the courts, and the correctional system. There are many professions within each area and numerous careers outside the discipline that recognize criminal justice as a quality degree. You'll want to take your time researching criminal justice professions carefully to decide which profession best suits your talents, interests, and abilities. Above all, you'll want to consider which profession sparks your excitement for learning!

The Internet and print materials can be great tools in your career search, but don't forget that face-to-face contact with professionals in the field is invaluable. Don't be afraid to interview law enforcement officers, lawyers, judges, correctional officers, crime prevention specialists, forensics experts, investigators, criminal justice professors, and others in the field of criminal justice for information about what they do. Remember to ask them how they feel about their jobs and if they would choose the field again. Most will be delighted to speak with you and proud to share their experiences. If you decide to enter a criminal justice profession, you'll want to be well informed, well educated, and sincerely committed.

Careers in criminal justice are wide ranging. A bachelor's degree is your platform for building a successful career in federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and in federal and state correctional systems both in institutional and community corrections.
