Master of Science in Criminal Justice

Mission

The mission of the Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) at East Carolina University is to educate new practitioners and to provide professional and higher education for those working in the field and seeking to advance their career.

On-line or On Campus

Course work for the Master of Science in Criminal Justice may be taken entirely over the Internet. Students can access courses at their convenience, blending course work into busy lives and other classes. The MSCJ is also available as a classroom experience for those who prefer the on-campus setting.

Master of Science Degree

  • Builds on a liberals arts foundation and prepares students for advancement in the profession and higher education
  • Provides the knowledge, skills and values to support autonomous advanced professional practice
  • Promotes and improves students' knowledge of issues related to diversity

Administrative Emphasis

The program emphasizes both criminal justice practice and administration. The practice component focuses on specific methods, techniques and skills used when working with police officers, probation and parole officers, mediators, guardians ad litem, and attorneys.

That administration component focuses on the formulation and implementation of policies, laws, and management issues such as decision making, fiscal responsibility, program evaluation, and performance evaluation. Systemic issues that affect the operations of criminal justice agencies are also emphasized.

Admissions

Candidates seeking admission into the graduate program must fulfill the general requirements of the Graduate School. These criteria include:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution
  • A minimum overall undergraduate grade point average or 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Satisfactory entrance examination scores are required on the GRE or MAT. (TOEFL may be required)

Applicants are required to submit a completed Graduate School Application Package, as well as a detailed resume (curriculum vitae), statement of purpose, transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities, and three letters of reference to the East Carolina University Graduate School.

Enrollment is limited and admissions will be competitive. Multiple selection criteria will be used, including GPA, entrance examination scores, prior academic preparation, statement of purpose, quality of references and prior work or volunteer experiences.
