Dietetics Internship
The dietetic internship program is a postbaccalaureate, generalist, supervised practice program that qualifies graduates for the Registration Examination for Dietitians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. Successful completion of the examination qualifies students to be licensed as dietitians in North Carolina and other states. This program* is available to students who have completed a baccalaureate degree and hold a Valid Verification Statement from a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).  Twenty-two interns are accepted each year.
The internship provides supervised practice in a variety of settings plus six hours of graduate courses. Based on your interests and career goals, you will be matched to practice tracks that develop expertise in specialized services such as hospitals, the ECU School of Medicine, wellness sites, community nutrition clinics, and school food service. The program, which requires a minimum of 1,160 hours of supervised practice, develops entry-level competence in dietetic practice. It can be completed in nine months of full-time study or a maximum of two years of part-time study
In addition to becoming registry-eligible, you will achieve competence in nutrition assessment, nutrition care planning, nutrition counseling and education, management and leadership, personnel management, problem solving and decision making, and professional growth and development. East Carolina's dietetic internship graduates have an excellent record in passing the registration examination.
Dietetic interns are placed in affiliating hospitals, schools, wellness sites,  and public health departments in communities throughout eastern North Carolina, including opportunities to work in both urban and rural settings. Supervision is provided to interns by registered dietitians in affiliating facilities and by program faculty who visit the placement and use the ECU School of Medicine telemedicine network.
The dietetic internship program at East Carolina University holds full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606, 312-899-4876.

Graduate Program
If you are admitted to the dietetic internship, you may also choose to complete a master's degree in nutrition and dietetics. As a dietetic intern, you are required to complete six semester hours of graduate courses that may be applied toward the master's degree. (The thirteen semester hours of dietetic internship courses may not be applied toward the master's degree.)

The master's degree in nutrition and dietetics requires a minimum of 33 hours of graduate work.  Requirements include graduate courses in nutrition, statistics and research, and methods and techniques.  A four member graduate faculty committee will help you plan a program designed to meet your personal career goals. The thesis option provides an opportunity for you to build depth of expertise in an area of interest to you.  A non-thesis option is also available.

Scholarships are available on a competitive basis through the College of Human Ecology and several professional organizations.
