 Nutrition and Dietetics: Dietetic Internship

The dietetic internship in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is an accredited program that qualifies graduates for the National Registration Examination for Dietitians. Successful completion of the examination allows students to become eligible to be licensed as dietitians in North Carolina and other states. Students who have completed their undergraduate (bachelor) degree and hold a recent Verification Statement from a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) are eligible to apply for this internship.

Students may choose to complete their master’s degree (degree seeking) in nutrition while completing the internship. To do so you will need to apply to the ECU graduate school as a degree-seeking student. All applicants, degree or non-degree seeking, must apply to the Graduate School as well as the internship. Once accepted into the internship program, interns are placed in a single county with affiliating hospitals, schools, wellness sites, and public health departments in communities throughout eastern North Carolina.

Course Requirements:

-- Nine hours of graduate courses. Three graduate internship practicum courses: (NUTR 6031,    6032, 6032). Additionally interns are required to take an Orientation NUTR 4800 and Staff Relief    4804 course.
-- Requires a minimum of 1,200 hours of supervised practice, meeting expectations of the    Commission on Dietetics Accreditation and Education (CADE.)

The Dietetic Internship also requires on-campus Orientation and monthly class days, but is otherwise scheduled at the assigned county sites.

note: All dietetic interns complete 9 credits that are eligible toward a graduate degree
