Dr. Elizabeth Carroll receives prestigious national award

The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) named Dr. Elizabeth “Bettie Ann” Carroll among the four recipients of the 2011 Board on Human Sciences (BoHS) Awards for outstanding contributions to research and human sciences in higher education.

Dr. Carroll, who has taught in the ECU Department of Child Development and Family Relations for 15 years, received the BoHS Outstanding Engagement Award for exceptional creativity and scholarship in the development, application and evaluation of outreach, extension and public service programs.

Since 2004, Dr. Carroll has worked to improve the lives of military families throughout North Carolina by coordinating the delivery of a program called Essential Life Skills for Military Families (ELSMF). With a $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Carroll developed ELSMF to help strengthen marriages and couple relationships by providing an engaging, evidence and skills-based curriculum for National Guard and Reserve families.

“BoHS members are proud to recognize the important contributions of these scholars who have made a positive difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities.” said Billie Collier, dean of the College of Human Sciences at Florida State University and BoHS chair.

The APLU was founded in 1887 and is dedicated to excellence in learning, discovery and engagement. Member campuses enroll more than 3.6 million undergraduate and 1.1 million graduate students.
