Sze Man Chan, a foreign student who moved to the United
States from Hong Kong 8 years ago, is a recent graduate from
East Carolina University’s CIDA accredited Interior Design
Program. Throughout her college career she was an active
student member of ASID. As a design student SzeMan
completed numerous courses emphasizing residential, hospitality,
sustainable, universal and commercial design. She
is also fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin.
As an extremely driven and dedicated young professional
with a passion for design, Sze Man is always
striving to do her best. Her professors and fellow
classmates often refer her to as a perfectionist. When
it comes to design her ultimate goal is to create a
sustainable and functional environment that someone
can comfortably live or work in. In her opinion “The
best design is one that the user is able to function in
with ease. A successful design should have to aid and
not hinder the user’s way of living or working. It also has to be compliant
with the user’s preference for things more easily seen and tangible.”
While Sze Man was working toward her Bachelor of Science Degree in
Interior Design she had the opportunity of interning for LDL Studio, a hospitality
architectural design firm located in Providence, Rhode Island. During
her studies she also conducted research for the Center of Sustainable Tourism
to promote sustainability in the Outer Banks. She specifically researched
innovative methods that the Outer Banks could implement in the design of
their buildings in order to upgrade its environment to a “green” vacation site.
Sze Man’s dream of studying abroad became a reality after shewas awarded
an Undergraduate Research and creativity award and then nominated to
be an international student to study abroad in Turkey. During her last semester
as a design student she studied Architecture and Environmental Design at
Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. While in Turkey she had the opportunity
to visitmany of Turkey’s major cities such as: Istanbul, Izmir, Cappadocia,
Ephesus, and Fethiye.
After studying abroad in Turkey and vacationing to both Hong Kong and
Australia, Sze Man is finally back in the United States. Sze Man is always
looking for ways to be involved in the industry in order to further develop
her skills and knowledge of design. She is currently trying to start her career
as a professional Interior Designer and hopes to be working for an interdisciplinary
design firm with other talented designers in the near future.
