| Three approaches have been applied to ensure student learning effectiveness. One is to make affective connection with students in the subject area so that students are able to recognize or realize the relevance and importance of the subject matter. This is done in ways showing/demonstrating how the information can be used or applied. For example, some basic historic facts about man-made fibers are about when they were invented and became commercially avaialble. If they are just basic facts without any application or 'use', then they will loss their importance as 'knowledge'. When students were shown how such basic facts can be used/applied in historical textile identification and replication, such basic knowledge of facts becomes powerful and students can see the point of why we are learning the specific content. The other approach is to make connection with students through how the specific subject can help or expand their career horizons. All the areas related to each course subject have career choice implications. When students find there are other possibilities of career in the related fields, they are more willing to connect with the content. The third one is to embede general skill improvment objectives within content delivery so that the skills will enable them to learn on their own, such as critical thinking, communication, reading and interpretaion, reasoning and analytical thinking, as well as people skill. This is particularly important for merchandising students who are compete with students in other fields as merchandising area can be entered by students with different education background. They need to be equipped with not only professional knowledge but also very excellent general skills needed in the profession.
One method of assurance of learning -teaching is through variety learning-teaching processes which make students search for information, think, understand and apply. For example, one assignment in MRCH 1135 class requires students to write a coherent paragraph by using the provides words/phrases related to the history of textile industry. To write a good paragraph, the students need to know the basic facts first about these terms, such as who is Samuel Slater and what he did... and how it connects to other terms phrases like industrial revoluation and 1776 when US declared independence.
Role modeling as instructor is also important in improving assurance of learning. For example, IDSN 2040 may be information intensive in certain areas, such as standards related to flammability. As instructor, I organized the information into a format by looking and examing different standards through a systematic approach via a table. But I don't enter all the information for all of the content. Students were asked to complete the rest of the content by following the system and reading the textbook chapter. Similar approach is applied to other content area when there seems to be overwhelming information. Through these modeling and practicing, students could improve their learning skills in processing complex and intensive information. The implied learning skill is analytical thinking. All assignments or quizzes have sample answers developed by the instructor for the students to review and compare. Therefore, these sample works by the instructor have the role playing and modeling effect. |

Assurance of Learning - Teaching |
2008 |
| In the textile courses, MRCH 2034 and IDSN 2040, the teaching and learning process is designed to help students move up the learning ladder from basic knowledge to comprehension to application to analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
For example, after basic concept intruductions like tenacity and denier related to fiber properties and fiber structure terms like orientation and morphology, students were given assignment to interpret the meanings of these concepts and terms from articles located in trade publications, then they were asked to apply these terms by doing designed filling-the-blank type of assignments and exams.
At the later stage of the course, students were asked to do analysis, synthesis and evaluation with textile product specification and application to an environment. Students need to break down the textile product to components and analyze each component, then evaluate the serviceability properties of each product by synthesizing all the information together, including research findings related to the special user and/or environment.
Through the semester, students were given frequent assignments and/or quizzes. Frequent feedbacks were provided to students. |

Distance Learning |
2007 |
| Re-designed MRCH 1135 Principles of Merchandising course content through application of current industry trends and data identified from primary sources or trade publicaiton sources. The lecture presentation has been modified to not only deliver content but also help students with basic skills in critical thinking, such as interpretation, making connection between ideas and making argument or statement through facts. A seires of assignments were developed which require students to show their understaning while learning new informaition about the apparel and home furnishing industry and merchandising. Sample assignment answers were provided to students as feedback for students to compare and to study as reference.
In IDSN 2040 Textiles for Interior class, course content has been revised to add more emphasis on standards and evaluations of differnt types of textiles as well as the estimate techniques related to upholstery, window treatment and flooring. Samll quizzes were developed and used through the semester to encourage students study and understand the materials. Lecture outlines were developed for students to use during classtime, which is aimed to encourage students being focused while having time to listen, to think and to respond.
With the Internship class MRCH 4883, internship agreement and contract have been updated through discussion with the university assistant attorney. All evaluation documents were revised into word form formats. These forms are avaialbe as soft copies so that students and their supervisor can type, save and send the documents back electronically.
In the new capstone class MRCH 4999, ECU resources were identified and applied, such as the ECU dowdy student bookstore, the ECU licensing office, the ECU marketing office, ECU intellectual property office as well as the trademark personnel. Staff members from these offices were invited to join the classroom to provide help with student project development. A field trip to Peter Millar has been arranged and conducted for the class to get inside information, inspiration and help with their project. The role of the instructor in this class is a facilitator, and there is no formal lecture. Students work on a hands-on project to 'execute' the merchandising concepts that they have learned so far in the merchandising program. |

Innovations in Course Content / Presentation |
2008 |
| MRCH 2239 content was revised to focusing on the study of dress cultures around the world, including Asian, Africa, Middle East region, North America and South America. Students were required to a team project of ethnic dress display in the display case of Rivers, in which students interviwed someone with a different culture background and borrowed a set of ethnic dress from the person for display. There were totally 13 ethnic dresses being displayed, including China, India, South Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Mexico, Tailand, Pakistan, Senegal (West Africa) and Jordan. |

Innovations in Course Content / Presentation |
2007 |
| In all courses, current developments of product knowledge for textiles or relevant culture events for apparel and human behavior, were incoporated in the teaching process. Students in textile course were give new textile samples located by the instructor and new product development articles so that students are updated with the current and future devleopment trend of textile products. In the apparel and human behavior couse, students were given frequent in-time readings located from New York Times and other publications and these readings were identified to relation to the topics covered in class, such as ethnicity issue, class stratification issue, religion (such as veil issue in school uniform debate), culture tradition etc. |
