0 The growing number of older prisoners with chronic health problems in federal and state prisons has placed great strains on correctional health-care budgets. While the current research has clarified the types of health problems reported by older prisoners and the prevalence rates of such problems in federal and state prisons, there is a dearth of research examining the statistical predictors of their health problems, and how such predictors might differ for younger versus older inmates. This proposal outlines a secondary analysis of data from the 1997 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities (N = 18,326 prisoners). This analysis will use multilevel regression models to identify statistical predictors of nine self-reported health problems (i.e., HIV/AIDS, cardiac problems, circulatory problems, cancer, kidney/liver problems, respiratory disorders, neurological disorders, skeletal problems, and diabetes). Statistical analyses will examine the role of predictors at the individual level (e.g., age, education,
gender, historical use of alcohol and/or drugs, offense history, race, sentence length, and socio-economic status), the institutional level (e.g., security level and potential placement in extreme environments such as death row, administrative segregation, and protective custody), and the regional level (north, south, east, west). The findings will identify which younger and older prisoners are at risk of chronic health problems, which would allow for:
(a) the development of screening instruments to identify specific inmates at risk of chronic health problems, especially among older prisoners who are most at risk; and (b) a more targeted allocation of correctional health-care dollars.
