Nancie Pending-External Mangels J Firearm-Related Spinal Cord Injuries in Eastern North Carolina Grant Proposal in Progress 2009
0 I am continuing my efforts to find a funding agency for my research on spinal cord injuries. Nancie Pending-External Mangels J 0.0000 Firearm-Related Spinal Cord Injuries in Eastern North Carolina Grant Proposal in Progress 2008
0 I am working on a grant proposal for a research project designed to determine the number of firearm-related spinal cord injuries, and examine the physical, psychological, and economic consequences of firearm-related spinal cord injuries in eastern North Carolina. It will also serve as a needs assessment for public health officials who deliver treatment and care to victims. The project will attempt to answer questions such as the number of spinal cord injuries that occur each year in eastern North Carolina, availability of services for uninsured victims of spinal cord injuries, effects of spinal cord injuries on the community, effects on victims' housing needs, effects on jails and prisons, and prevention of firearm-related spinal cord injuries. Recent statistics from the National Spinal Cord Injury Database indicate that since the 1980s, there have been reported increases in communities (Berkowitz, Harvey, Greene, and Wilson, 1992; Go, DeVivo, and Richards, 1995). Go et al. (1995) argue that violence is the primary cause of traumatic SCIs in the African American community, and the majority of SCIs among African Americans are firearm-related. This project is consistent with the University mission of community outreach, as the goal is to gain information that will improve the quality of life for residents of eastern North Carolina, and reduce the number of SCIs in the area. It may have implications for the rest of the state and other states.
