| I co-teach IDSN 4500-4501 Interior Design Studio IV: Universal Design in Spring 2009. My colleague and I made some changes in the content of the course with respect to the Site Visit Report of Council of Interior Design Accreditation which is completed in October 2008. We emphesize the global perspective by giving five countries to each group (of five students). Each of these countries has an aging population problem. The students are asked to design an Assisted Living Facility for answering the cultural and health needs of the aging population of these countries. The students are required to research the anthropometric data of each country, and use these dimensions in their design decision process. At the end of the semester, each student will design a seating unit to be used in their own facility in full scale. |

| There were fifteen students enrolled to IDSN 3650 Kitchen and Bath Design course. The students learned about the detailed information for designing working kitchens and bathrooms. Each student designed a kitchen and a bathroom of a real life client, who applied to be a volunteer for this phase of the course. Moreover, all the students were required to participate to two national design competitions and one regional competition. The successful students awarded $2400._ scholarship in total. <br>This year for the very first time, National Kitchen and Bath Association allowed the seniors and immediate graduates to sit for Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer exam without paying the fees. Two of the eight students of this program passed the exam. |

| IDSN 2850 Interior Design Studio II: Commercial Design course was offered to interior design program students at sophomore level during 11 weeks summer session of 2008. The interior design students were asked to design a Marketplace for Downtown Greenville with the support of Uptown Greenville Association. The students paired up with the students of merchandising program of the same department in order to complete this project. The merchandising students designed a business plan for this marketplace whereas the interior design students did the conceptual design of the 6th Street parking lot as a marketplace. During the project development phase all the students did a field trip as a Study Abroad Program component to northern Italy for one week. The students observed the historic marketplaces of Italy and engage their design with the knowledge that they learned during this trip. The final projects were presented to ECU faculty, staff, representers of Uptown Greenville Association and City of Greenville on August 1, 2008 at Mendenhall Student Center. |

| I have given the IDSN 4500-01 Interior Design Studio IV: Universal Design course for the 5th time.
I changed the final project from the residential design for a college student wheelchair user to a residential design for a non-traditional family (a grandparent, a parent and a teenager). This experience is among the requirements of Council of Interior Design Accreditation.
I also improved the Post Occupancy Evaluation part of the course. The students are making a team of three and finding an assited living facility in eastern North Carolina. Each team will organzie a field trip of their own and they will do Post occupancy Evaluation of the facility by using a checklist which was developed by Hunt McKinnon and me in Summer 2007. Each team is going to write a 3500-4000 words evaluation report about their chosen facility at the end of the semester. |

| I made some changes within the content of IDSN 3650 Kitchen and Bath Design course. Upon the comments that I received from the prervious year, I decreased the number of projects that must be completed in one semester from 9 to 7.
Also the registered students sat for GE Kitchen Student Design Charette Competition with the students of Virginia Politechnical institute and State Universityon 12/01/08 in Blacksburg, VA. One of the best outcomes of this experience was visiting the famous Dream Kitchen Lab. in their facilities. The students found the opportunity of actually observing six different real life kitchens with the casework, countertops, hardware, appliances, and finishes. |

| I developed a series of 3D models mad of Mat-Board for IDSN 1281 Interior Design Manual Graphics course. I developed a series of excercises for the Freshman/Sophomore students to understand the Orthographic Projection Systems and Paraline Drawing Systems more clearly. The models helped the student sto understand some concepts like, forshortening of the inclined surfaces, etc. They also understood how the coordinate system works in drafting paraline views of the objects/spaces.
I also integrated the metric system with the course in 2008 Spring semester. The students are working with both Imperial and Metric scales for completing their assignments. Developing an awareness of metric system in Interior Design Education is a requirement of Council of Interior design Accreditation.
The third significant change in this course is increasing the number of quick sketches of the complex forms on Isometric grid papers. The students are learning the interpret the 2D images of the complex forms and then they sketch the 3D Isometric views of the images before drafting them on the Bristol papers with drafting equipment. This is helping them to visualize the complex forms by following the lines and surfaces given as orthographic views. |

| Dr. Kate Carroll, Hunt McKinnon and I have been preparing three existing courses with the Study Abroad Experience component. I have the responsibility of IDSN 2850 Interior Design Studio II: Commercial Design course. This course has been offered by Interior Design program every semester. This is the first time that it has been re-designed with a two weeks of Northern Italy and Western Turkey trips during the summer. The most important aspect of this course is that it is interdisciplinary. The interior Design students will find the opportunity of working with the Merchandising students to develop a conceptual design of an open-air market place for City of Greenville, NC. Uptown Greenville Association is supporting this program, and the students will do their final presentation to vendors from Uptown Greenville. |

| Amy Spruill, Junior in Interior Design, received a $750._ fellowship as an Undergraduate Research Assistant. She took IDSN 4003 Independent Senior Elective course and she developed two residential Kitchen layouts which could be constructed and installed in R-253 of Rivers Building. Both of the models could be used as a learning environment for the Interior Design students in IDSN 3650 Kitchen and Bath Design, IDSN 3600 Systems, IDSN 3550 Materials and Specifications, and IDSN 4500 Interior Design Studio IV: Universal Design courses. Amy also received a first place award ($300._) with this research project under the Oral Prersentation category of CHE Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum in 2007 Spring. |

This research has been conducted with Dr. Marina Alexander with the support of National Kitchen and Bath Association. The objective of the research is to determine whether the Generation Y is significantly different from the predecessors: Baby Boomers and Generation X, in their kitchen design preferences. This resaearch will help the Kitchen and Bath industry to get ready for Genration Y, since this group of population will start to purchase their own houses in a couple of years.
During this research two surveys were prepared:
1. The survey for the membership of NKBA: We sent this survey online to 5000 randomly selected members of NKBA through their list serve. The purpose of this survey was to understand what the industry would like to know about this Generation Y.
2.The Survey for the Generation Y: The questions of this survey are prepared upon the feedback from the Kitchen and Bath Industry and NKBA's Kitchen Client Survey, which is used by the kitchen specialists to understand the specific needs of the clients. This survey was sent to 4963 randomly selected ECU graduates through the alumni list serve. The responses were collected and the analysing is in progress.
The expected outcome of this reseach is publishing the results in Journal of Housing and Society. |

An Alternative Delivery System for Assisted Living Services for the Next Generation of Americans
This research has been conducted with Hunt McKinnon since 2007 Summer. Dr. Carol Jenkins is the third investigator in this project. The main objective of the research is determining the demographic facts about the aging Baby Boomers in eastern North Carolina, and finding alternative service delivery systems for this generation.
We have invited the faculty members of College of Human Ecology for expanding the borders of this research, since 'aging at home' will require support in nutrition, in social work, in family relations, in criminal justice, in merchandising, and in interior design majors. |
