The certificate provides graduates special skills and knowledge of child welfare practice.

The goals of the certificate include enhancing the knowledge, skills and understanding of child welfare practice for persons involved in the prevention, assessment or treatment of children and families experiencing or at risk of child abuse, neglect or dependency. The certificate is designed to enhance practice with children and families and is housed in the College of Human Ecology, School of Social Work.

Students may obtain a certificate in child welfare studies by successfully completing fifteen credit hours. SOCW 6006, SOCW 6007, and CDFR 6406 are required along with 6 hours of related electives. Two courses in the child and family specialization of the MSW Program--SOCW 6422 and SOCW 6426—may be substituted for SOCW 6006 and SOCW 6007.
