Social Work in Child Welfare in a local NC Department of Social Services is not easy work but it can be very personally rewarding.

The primary task of a child welfare social worker is to ensure the safety of children.  Social workers work in one of five functions in the local DSS: intake, Assessment/investigations, case planning/case management, and foster care or adoptions.

The decision to enter this part of the social work profession is best made by talking to others in the field and by finding but as much information as possible.

Visit or call your local social service agency to talk with a social worker about their role. The NC DSS county directory web page can be found by clicking here.

Also visit the NC Children’s Services web site to read about the child welfare functions.

If you are interested in child welfare as a career you may want to consider applying
for the child welfare education collaborative while pursuing your MSW or BSW degree.

Scholars in the North Carolina Child Welfare Education Collaborative attend classes, fieldwork, training, and seminars that provide specialized preparation for careers in public child welfare.  Any BSW or MSW student interested in committing to providing services for families and children in North Carolina child welfare may apply.  Current DSS employees are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants to the Collaborative must be accepted to or enrolled in a participating BSW or MSW program.  Candidates complete a written application and interview with the Awards Selection Committee.  Students who are DSS employees must provide a letter of support from the agency director.

MSW students may apply for the child welfare collaborative after acceptance into the MSW program.
BSW students may apply for the child welfare collaborative after acceptance into the BSW program with classification as a junior.

Applications to both programs are accepted in May for June selection each year.  Should an additional selection be held during the year, all social work students will be made aware of the application deadline via email announcement.
