Dr. Lena Carawan is an Assistant Professor of Social Work who teaches courses ranging from Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare, Practice, Field Education, Research, and Special Populations. Dr. Carawan is original from rural eastern NC, where she grew up in the only county without a stoplight. She received her BSW from ECU, MSW for UNC-Chapel Hill, and Her doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. Her research and personal interest involve working with special populations, studying rural communities, and fishing families and communities. Dr. Carawan’s most cherished award is one she received from BSW students in 2003. She continues to try and live by the following quote: “I get to choose my thoughts every day all day so I try to make them positive!”
