• We support all university approved Dell desktops and laptops. This is limited to models that are on state contract and is dictated by ITCS and the university. Computers that are not purchased by ECU, brought from another institution, donated, or ECU computers at home cannot be supported.
• If a new or replacement printer or scanners please contact your unit office as it is their responsibility for purchasing such equipment.
• When placing an order for any of these items please consult with personnel in the College Office for Technology and Distance Education Services to insure compatibility and support. If unsupported models are ordered we will be unable to offer any support for this equipment.

The Office of Technology and Distance Education Services Supports the following software:

• Microsoft Office Suite 2003,2007, and 2010 (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel) – If you wish to upgrade from Office 2007 to 2010 you will need to place a request with ITCS (this is for licensing reasons).
• Windows XP and Windows 7
• Internet Browsers: Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox
• Media Players: Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Real Player, and Flash Player
• Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver
• Nero DVD burning software

We are unable to support 3rd party, discipline specific software. We will be happy to review technical specifications to insure compatibility, but it will be the responsibility of the individual using the software to insure proper functionality. If you have questions about software that is not listed please contact our office.

The Office of Technology and Distance Education Services provides primary support for the smart classrooms in the Rivers building. If you need training, have questions about the equipment, or need to report a problem please place a service request at www.ecu.edu/che/technology.html. If you encounter a classroom emergency please contact our office directly or ITCS (328-9830) for support.

When teaching outside of the Rivers building you will need to request technology equipment from your respective unit office. If you are unsure how to use the equipment please contact our office for training prior to use. Due to limited resources and personnel we can only offer limited support for those teaching in classrooms outside the Rivers building. We cannot setup equipment and/or come to the classroom for emergencies (usually by the time we would arrive it would have significantly cut into time of instruction).

College Website

The College of Human Ecology website provides detailed information to future and current students, alumni, and faculty and staff. The College website is divided into four sections; Academic Units, College Information, College Resources, and ECU Resources. The college website has four scheduled updates throughout the calendar year. If there is content on the site that needs to be changed or updated please go to the college SharePoint homepage at https://collab.ecu.edu/sites/che/default.aspx and click on the appropriate unit under the “web update submissions.” Once this request has been submitted your unit representative (IT/DE committee member) will approve the submission. These changes will take place during the next scheduled updates.

College SharePoint Site

This web based tool allows users to share documents, pictures, and other materials within your department and the college. It also has many other different tools such as a Technology Service Request form for technology assistance. A Computer Lab Reservation Calendar which will allow you to reserve the computer lab for your class. If a user tries to log on to SharePoint off campus they will need to use “INTRA\your username” in as the username along with your ECU password to gain access. If you have any questions or concerns about SharePoint or any other technology concerns please feel free to contact our office.

The Office of Technology and Distance Education Services provides limited video services. These include video conferencing using a Tandberg video IP conferencing unit (Rivers RW 342), webcam conferencing (using ECU issued webcams), and Mediasite recordings.

Mediasite recordings offer a web based recording or stream that includes video of the presenter and a console that simultaneously displays computer presentations. Due to limited resources we can only consider recording certain guest speakers, meetings, and/or special events. We ask that any request be placed at least 2 weeks prior to the desired recording date.

The use of video conferencing has become a very valuable communication tool and has enabled us to communicate not only nationally, but internationally at little to no cost. The best source for this is the Tandberg unit located in Rivers RW 342 conference room. To use this equipment you must attend a mandatory information and training session. Webcams are also a very useful tool and may offer a simpler solution for meeting your conferencing needs. The Office of Technology and Distance Education Services manages two computer labs in the Rivers building. Rivers 139 which is general purpose computer lab and is open for all students use. The CAD lab is located in Rivers 254 is considered a specialized lab and is for use by IDMR students only. This lab is equipped with specialized CAD software and large format plotters. These labs are funded by ITCS and are subject to ITCS usage policies. This means that use for instruction, specifically Rivers 139, can only be used for limited instructional purposes.
