M4 Selective: Global Heatlh

Director: Peter J. Kragel, M.D. and Rosina Chia, Ph.D.
Duration: 4 Weeks, 1/2 time
Location: Global Classroom
Dates Offered: April 2006

 

Goals:

  • Understand how health care systems differ in other countries
  • Understand how culture impacts health decisions
  • Understand how training of health providers differs in other countries

Objectives:

  • Upon completion of the elective, participants will be able to:
    • Describe different health systems and how they impact health care
    • Describe how cultural background impacts patient care
    • Describe strengths and weaknesses of other systems of medical educations
    • Give an oral presentation on an aspect of global health

Student Experience:

Students participate in structured interaction with students from other countries using the internet and the global health classroom. Students will also be paired with student(s) from other countries and conduct e-mail and chat communication to further discussions related to health issues and explore cultural differences leading to an appreciation and understanding of other cultures.

The structured interaction will include:

I. Cultural aspects of health

A. Folk/alternative medicine
B. Cultural issues related to healthy behavior/lifestyle
C. Social stigmas: HIV, mental health, cancer, SARS etc.

II. Comparative Health Systems

A. Access

III. Medical Training
