About Telehealth Services
We are all aware of the impact of the information age and technology on patient care. Electronic medical records, internet medical websites, and prescription PDA’s are all a part of our lives. Yet nothing will ever replace the importance of the person to person contact needed to provide the best of care. We all appreciate the supportive role of human contact in healing. Yet until recently support for physicians that provide care has been wanting, especially for those working on the front lines outside major medical centers.
I have been recently assigned the job of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Center for Health Sciences Communications and Telehealth. In this role, one of my very important duties is the development of programs for support of physicians in our region. One of those programs is telehealth. Possibilities via telehealth facilities are almost endless. However, four very important roles that telehealth should play are:
- One-on-one physician consultation with specialty and subspecialty physicians for patient care plan development.
- Direct patient care utilizing telehome care instrumentation, e.s. ultrasound, non mydriatic, cameras, otoscopes , etc.
- Patient support groups for patients and their families with complicated medical conditions deal with the day to day realities of a serious medical condition.
- Teleconference continuing education for health care providers who may be unable to travel for updates and refresher courses.
We are interested in helping doctors continue to provide the very best of care for patients.
