The Office of Community Engagement and Research (CER) connects East Carolina University (ECU) with the larger community to create new ways of understanding complex issues through partnership, outreach, and engaged scholarship.

Our Mission

CER enriches and prepares students, faculty, and staff of East Carolina University to support a thriving future for eastern North Carolina and the world around us.  CER reinforces the enduring values of the University’s commitment to maximize student success, serve the public, and lead regional transformation.

History & Awards

In 2007, ECU committed to public service by creating the Office of Community Relations and Public Service. In 2017, as a recognition of the strong portfolio of community engaged scholarship championed through its programs, the office was renamed the Office of Community Engagement and Research.

It houses an assortment of programs that foster service and engagement to students, faculty, and staff.  ECU is a Carnegie Engaged Institution, has been designated by the Associate of Public and Land-grant Universities as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University, and continues to provide opportunities of discovery and development in eastern North Carolina and beyond.

In 2012, the University was awarded the prestigious C. Peter Magrath University/Community Engagement Award for the Lucille W. Gorham Intergenerational Community Center and in 2016 and 2017 won the W.K Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award for the MATCH program.
