DISTANCE EDUCATION WHAT IS DISTANCE EDUCATION? East Carolina University offers off-campus options to meet the needs of students facing the challenges of time, distance, and family and work responsibilities. Options for Adult Learners at the Division of Continuing Studies provides information about what Distance Education is at ECU. Distance education is the term used to describe the instruction that takes place when the instructor and the student are not face-to-face or when the instruction takes place away from campus. Below are the modes of delivery that are used through our program: Internet – Courses follow a semester-based format. Students log onto the course Web site to obtain the course syllabus, complete homework, receive instructor announcements, and communicate with the instructor and classmates. Live, Onsite – Often ECU faculty travel to off-campus locations throughout the state. A majority of the onsite courses are located in Eastern North Carolina.
