MAED IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

Please refer to Section 7, School of Education, for degree requirements of the master of arts in education (MAEd), which leads to advanced licensure.

Academically Gifted Licensure

Licensure in academically gifted is available as an add-on to an existing G-level certificate.  The program requires 12 s.h. of graduate study in the academically gifted subject area.

Required courses: SPED 6104, 6401, 6402, 6403.  If required courses have been taken for credit for other than the master's degree in special education, appropriate substitute courses will be recommended.

5101. Introduction to Exceptional Children (3) Incidence, nature, causes, rehabilitation, and education of exceptional children.

5102. Perspectives in Mental Retardation (3) Incidence, nature, causes, and education of students who have mental retardation.

5301. Tests and Measurements in Special Education (3) P: Consent of instructor. Basic testing theory in terms of exceptional children.

5501, 5502. Minor Problems in Special Education (3,3) (WI) Each may be repeated for maximum of 6 s.h. P: Consent of instructor. Conference, library, or lab work in area of special education.

6000. Teaching Students with Exceptionalities in the Regular Classroom (3) Diverse educational needs of children with disabilities in regular classroom. Identification and placement procedures, academic and behavioral strategies, and curriculum and evaluation modifications.

6002. Addressing Differences in Human Learning in Schools (3) P: EDUC 6001. Strategies for assessment, curriculum, and instruction of diverse student populations. Extends and applies information from EDUC 6001.

6010. Issues, Trends, and Research in Special Education (3) Current issues, trends, and research in special education. Emphasis on legislation, litigation, definitions, identification, eligibility, inclusion, and placement. Research design and methodology in special education.

6011. Integrating Technology into Special Education (3) P: 3 s.h. technology course. Strategies for integration of technology into instruction, record keeping, management, productivity, communication, and professional development of special educators.

6012. Assessment in Special Education (3) P: EDUC 6001; SPED 6010. Selection, administration, interpretation, and application to program planning of assessment instruments and strategies in special education. Examines research, legislative mandates, and APA standards.

6013. Communication and Collaboration in Special Education (3) P: EDUC 6001; SPED 6010. Culturally responsive communication and collaboration with families, community agencies, and other professionals. Focus on skills that provide effective programs and services for students with exceptionalities.

6020. Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Special Education for Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6012. Planning, delivering, monitoring, and modifying instructional programs for students with mild to moderate disabilities. Focus on NC Standard Course of Study; issues related to IEPs, ITPs, and IFSPs; lesson and unit planning; and program and program evaluation.

6021. Instructing Students with Mental Retardation (3) P: SPED 6011, 6020. Planning, delivering, monitoring, and modifying instructional programs. Emphasis on applying research literature to acquire and refine best practices in instruction of students who have mental retardation.

6022. Instructing Students with Learning Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6011, 6020. Planning, delivering, monitoring, and modifying instructional programs. Emphasis on applying research literature to acquire and refine best practices in instruction of students with learning disabilities.

6023. Instructing Students with Behavioral/Emotional Disorders (3) P: SPED 6010, 6011, 6020. Evaluation and modification of instructional and management programs for students and youth with behavioral/emotional disorders. Examines research and demonstration of best practices through classroom teaching.

6030. Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Special Education for Students with Low-Incidence Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6012. Planning, delivering, monitoring, and modifying instructional programs for students with low-incidence disabilities. Focus on issues related to IEPs, ITPs, IFSPs; instructional planning; curriculum development; program planning; and evaluation.

6031. Instructing Students with Low-Incidence Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6010, 6011, 6030, 6301. Planning, delivering, monitoring, and modifying instructional programs. Emphasis on applying research literature to acquire and refine best practices in instruction of students who have low-incidence disabilities.

6040. Internship in Special Education (3) P: EDUC 6001; SPED 6002, 6013; 6021 or 6022 or 6023 or 6031. Individually planned, indepth field experiences for students in field of mental retardation, learning disabilities, behavioral/emotional disorders, or low-incidence disabilities.

6101. Introduction to Learning Disabilities (3) Incidence, nature, causes, and education of students with learning disabilities.

6104. Introduction to Gifted Education (3) Definitions, characteristics, theories of intelligence, and theories of teaching used with gifted students.

6201. Methods and Materials for Teaching Learning-Disabled Children I (3) P: SPED 6101. Methods, materials, and techniques of diagnosing students with learning disabilities.

6202. Methods and Materials for Teaching Learning-Disabled Children II (3) P: SPED 6101. Methods, materials, and techniques of prescriptive teaching of students with learning disabilities.

6203. Advanced Methods and Materials for Mental Retardation I (3) Methods, materials, and techniques of teaching students with mild mental retardation. Emphasis on directed observation.

6204. Advanced Methods and Materials for Mental Retardation II (3) Methods, materials, and techniques of teaching students with moderate mental retardation. Emphasis on directed observation.

6301. Seminar in Multiple Disabilities (3) Orthopedic and other muscle, skeletal, and special health impairments of children. Medical, psychological, and social issues associate with such disabilities described and special education adaptations indicated.

6302. Research in Special Education (3) Advanced course for special education majors. Survey and critical analysis of research relating to problems of educating persons who have disabilities.

6303. Administration and Supervision in Special Education (3) Principles and practices of administering special educational  programs and services.

6401. Methods and Materials in Gifted Education (3) P: SPED 6104 or consent of instructor. Materials, programs, and theories of educating gifted students.

6402. Differentiated Curriculum for the Gifted (3) P: SPED 6104 or consent of instructor. Student and program assessment and development of differentiated curricula for gifted students.

6403. Practicum in Gifted Education (3) P: SPED 6104, 6401, 6402; or consent of instructor. Classroom experience with gifted students. Planning and implementation of instructional programs.

6601. Introduction to Low Incidence Populations (3) Theory, research, and practices related to education of persons with low-incidence disabilities.

6602. Methods in Elementary Programming for Low Incidence Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6601. Methods, materials, and techniques of teaching students with low-incidence disabilities. Emphasis on community-based training and transition programming during school years.

6603. Methods for Secondary Programming for Low Incidence Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6602. Methods, materials, and techniques of teaching adults with low-incidence disabilities. Emphasis on community-based training and transition programming for adult years.

6990, 6991. Practicum in Learning Disabilities (3,3) P: 12-15 s.h. in SPED; consent of instructor. Directed experience with students who have learning disabilities.

6992, 6993. Internship in Mental Retardation (3,3) Directed experience with students who have mental retardation.

6997. Internship: Low Incidence Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6603. Directed experience with students who have low-incidence  disabilities.

6998. Internship: Low Incidence Disabilities (3) P: SPED 6997. Directed experience with students who have low-incidence  disabilities.
