The UNC Distance
Learning Virtual Forum ~
A Great Success - Thanks for Your
Participation!
Academic
Outreach hosted the first virtual UNC DL Forum for UNC
General Administration on December 10, 2008. The
forum featured presentations and demonstrations about
distance learning from faculty and staff from several
UNC institutions as well as from UNC General
Administration. Over 250 participated in the live
and recorded sessions, which provided an avenue for
sharing success and challenges as well as networking
with others across the state.
Here’s
what participants said about the UNC DL
Forum:
·
“Lots of information presented that
is valuable for faculty. Many more people can
participate because there is no travel. People can also
participate part-time, based on their
schedules.”
·
“Wonderful
(new to me) access to the people in the system who are
making policy. 2 - Some skeptics forced to see and
experience for themselves how DE really works and how it
can be for students and faculty. 3 - Great intro to new
technology. I had never heard of Ning until this
conference.”
·
It
was a time efficient and cost effective way to have the
conference. I liked seeing the other people on line.
Maybe after we use this more often, more people will ask
questions. This was a very good
experience.
This
was a great success and we look forward to hosting more
virtual forums and
conferences!

Technology
Advancement Center ~ Develops an
Automated Online Proctoring Process for
COB
This
is a project that was designed by the College of
Business in collaboration with the Technology
Advancement Center (TAC) to streamline the process used
by students requesting proctor approvals and scheduling
exams. The
project began with the TAC conducting a needs analysis
to analyze the existing process. The TAC studied
the process and identified tasks that could be combined,
simplified, and/or eliminated. A new automated
online process was designed, created, and shared with
the COB Proctoring Office for their approval and is
scheduled to be evaluated by classes in the Spring 2009
Semester.
It is envisioned that the new process will save
the Proctoring Office many hours throughout the semester
and allow students to schedule exams and
request proctors much faster.

action, contact: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/tac/index.cfm

University
Multimedia Center ~
The
University Multimedia Center (UMC) develops and deploys
web-based projects for a variety of instructional,
research, and presentation initiatives. Our team
develops multimedia projects for interactive course
content and promotional purposes, and consults with
faculty members on the instructional use of creative
technology. Our most currently completed projects
include “Politics of a Massacre “ (http://core.ecu.edu/umc/wilmington/)
which offers archival resources for some of the most
significant documents, images and links related to the
only know coup d’état in the history of the United
States and “World Aloft” (http://core.ecu.edu/umc/wrights/)
which is a forum for contemplation on the history of the
Wright brothers and their role in the history of
flight.

Global Academic Initiatives
~
The
Global Understanding Course under Global Academic
Initiatives made another benchmark in Spring,
2009. The course started as an Anthropology course
with the plan to provide these opportunities in other
disciplines. With the help of Dr. Jami
Leibowitz the Teaching Coordinator of the Global
Understanding Course and consultation from Dr. George
Bailey, a most experienced faculty in university
curriculum affairs, Dr. Marion Eppler from the
Department of Psychology submitted the proposal for a
Global Understanding: Psychological
Perspectives Course and is teaching it for
the first time in Spring, 2009. These Anthropology
and Psychology courses are practical examples of
integrating real time global experiences in courses. ECU
is leading in this effort to bring experiences to all of
our students!
Our
Teaching Team at GAI wishes everyone a most Happy
Chinese New Year of the Ox! Jan 26 is the first
day of the New
Year.

Second Life ~ A
3D Virtual World Expands to High School
Students
This
January ECU launched a new, e-learning pilot for
high school students called the Early College High
School Program. Initiated by Shirley Carraway, the
Director of Special Projects, and supported by Academic
Outreach Technology Services, the program
offers high school students the opportunity to earn
college credits by taking completely virtual and dynamic
courses through Second Life. In addition to Second Life,
some course material will be available through Moodle to
serve as a secondary supplement. In this initial
stage, ECHS is only holding two courses.
Three
students from each Pitt county high school have been
selected to participate in this pilot, slating a grand
total of eighteen junior level students for the Spring
semester. Both the families and the students have
shown strong enthusiasm and great initiative in starting
the students’ virtual personas.
The
students visited ECU’s campus on January 26, 2009 and
had a full day to enjoy the college experience. Their schedule
included a tour of the campus, lunch at the West End
Dining Hall, and a training session with Academic
Outreach in the afternoon. The project is in its first
phase with expectations of rolling out full scale in the
Fall of 2010.

Moodle @ECU
Academic Outreach is continuing its
support and use of Moodle, the Open Source
Content Management System. Moodle assists
educators in creating effective online learning
communities with an open interface and
options. You can create a very interactive
learning environment that
will stimulate your student’s learning and
imagination. If you would like to place
your course in Moodle, please contact Sharon
Collins (collinss@ecu.edu) Moodle training is also available
through the Academic Outreach Out and
About.
Centra
Saba Centra is an online learning
environment that delivers the classroom
environment to your students combining a highly
interactive virtual classroom learning,
e-meeting, and web seminar platform.
Centra is being used throughout almost every
college at ECU to create a more social
environment for students.
The Centra team will be providing
training through our Out and
About sessions and also through
departmental training sessions. Please
look for additional announcements or continue to check our
website. You may also contact
Sharon Collins collinss@ecu.edu and John Southworth southworthj@ecu.edu for additional
information. |

DE
Student Orientation
The DE Orientation will
take students step-by-step through the process
of how to get started taking classes
online. As students work through the
orientation, they will discover answers to
questions such as: What is distance
education? Who is my advisor, and how
do I contact him/her? How do I access course
material? How do I get an email account and DE
student card?

Contingency
Plan
As with any technology, Blackboard and
other Internet based course delivery systems
have the potential for technical problems. To
prepare for potential problems and/or downtime,
we strongly advise all instructors using any
Internet based course delivery systems to have a
contingency plan when the technology is not
available. A contingency plan involves
anticipating and planning for an alternate
delivery of course material and communication
when a service interruption occurs; please visit
the following link for information to help
create your contingency plan for Spring
2009.http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/learningplatforms/contingency.cfm
