MD IN 7 is designed for highly motivated entering East Carolina University freshmen. This program provides an opportunity for students to complete their undergraduate and medical degree in seven years. The MD in 7 works hand in hand with the Brody School of Medicine to support and offer this option. The Brody School of Medicine is the only participating medical school a student is eligible to attend through the MD in 7 program.*(The Brody School of Medicine only accepts North Carolina residents.) Students must complete all the required medical school prerequisites by the end of their sophomore or second year. To remain eligible for the MD in 7 program students must maintain the following:
• 3.5 overall GPA
• 3.5 GPA in all science courses
• 3.5 GPA in all required medical school prerequisites
All eligible students must apply to the Brody School of Medicine at the end of their sophomore year. If need be, they would take the MCAT that summer and apply no later than August 1. It is recommended that MD in 7 students have strong volunteer or shadowing experiences before applying to the Brody School of Medicine.
INTEGRATED BACHELORS/MASTERS is designed for rising high school seniors. The program attracts students who are focused on their goals and career minded. It allows students to be admitted to a graduate program earlier in their undergraduate studies. Graduate-level course work is taken during the senior year and counts twice, first as credit toward the graduate degree and then as the undergraduate course work needed to complete the bachelor’s degree. Students may complete their undergraduate degree in the three-year program or in the traditional four-year program. The program pairs undergraduate and graduate programs that best fit together so students can mix and match disciplines for the two degrees. For example, integrating the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics is a natural combination but so is a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science combined with a master’s degree in physical therapy. Other combinations, including those from the health and physical sciences, education, and the liberal arts, are available.
STUDY ABROAD One of the most exciting educational experiences offered at East Carolina University is the opportunity for students to spend time studying abroad. Living and studying in another country provides students with opportunities that are unique to the college experience, as the cultural and social interactions produced through living abroad affect an individual’s academic and personal growth in ways impossible to duplicate at home.
HONORS PROGRAM offers students individualized attention, small college feel at a large university, exclusive residence halls, small class sizes, recognition on diploma and transcript, early registration, and opportunities to work one on one with faculty members.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH provides opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in various conferences and symposia. Additionally, assistantships, grants and travel stipends are available through the office. The office is home to Explorations – The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities for the State of North Carolina. Please check this Web page periodically for upcoming opportunities to get involved in Undergraduate Research.
