Major Exploration
I didn't really like the courses in my major. I couldn't handle the academic requirements of my major. I became interested in another career. I was in my first major because that is what my parents wanted me to do. I finally decided to tell them that I wanted to do something else. I have learned a lot about myself and know that I will be happier in another major and different career. If you are deciding on a major or changing a major remember:
The first thing people ask after you have told them you go to college is, "What is your major?" Believe it or not, many students begin college without having a major in mind. Even though declaring a major is one of the first milestones on one's career path, being "undecided" is very normal. It is also common for students to decide that they want to change majors during their college career. They are called "reconsidering" students. This change can be a result of a number of causes. Students who change their majors have said: |
You are more than your major! Your self-identity is not only tied to your academic life, but to your social, spiritual, physical, and emotional life.
Selecting your major is not the same as selecting a career. Although some careers like nursing, teaching, and engineering require specialized degrees, many do not.
Investigating careers is one way to decide on a major. You can also consider looking at classes you excel in and classes you enjoy to provide a direction towards a major.
Interests + Skills + Passions + Talents = the Right Major For You.
Selecting a major is only one step in your academic career. Completing your degree is more
important than being 100% sure that you picked the right major.
Making any decision is better than making no decision at all. Don't wait too long to decide upon a major.
