I entered the Coastal Resources Management Program in 2003. Prior to that I worked as an archaeologist for the Fort Bragg Cultural Resources Program. My research interests include Native American prehistoric archaeology, geoarchaeology, stone tool technology, prehistoric settlement patterns, and lithic quarry sourcing As a student in the Coastal Resources Management Program I am expected to integrate my research interests in archaeology with Coastal Geosciences, Coastal Ecology, and Coastal Policy. I am currently working with Dr. Randy Daniel in the Department of Anthropology to develop a research strategy for locating and testing relict aeolian landforms on the Tar River. My dissertation work will be to locate, map, and test aeolian dunes for stratified archaeological deposits. To that end, I will work with other archaeologists and geologists to analyze and possibly date dune sediments in areas determined to contain buried archaeological sites. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the presence of intact and buried archaeological deposits in the North Carolina Coastal Plain and to define the conditions necessary for site burial. Identifying stratified archaeological sites will help to answer questions of chronology and typology of prehistoric hunter-gatherers on the North Carolina coast and may be of benefit as temporal markers for paleoclimate and paleosedimentological changes within the Tar River drainage basin. When I finish, I plan to work as a geoarchaeologist within the realm of private sector cultural resource management.
