The Office of Academic Outreach, Continuing and Distance Education supports the mission of the university by providing an overall suite of services that allow academic units to concentrate on the core mission of teaching, research and service. This integrated support structure has allowed tradition academic departments to extend their reach beyond the campus boundaries and partner with other universities, the community colleges in the region, PK-12 schools, military, business, industry and international partners.
The structure aligns itself with ECU’s strategic directions and operational objectives. This design allows for a targeted focused initiative in each of these critical University programs while maintaining a cost effective centralized and integrated set of administrative and support services. The Office has developed the experience and expertise to provide consulting and support with a full spectrum of services that encompass marketing, program development, student services, academic, administrative, and fiscal management.

Established in 1947 as the Bureau of Field Services and re-named the Office of Academic Outreach, Continuing and Distance Education, the office has been honored to serve eastern North Carolina for almost 65 years. Focused on service, the office continues to be called upon to lead and support initiatives sometimes considered to fall outside the boundaries of the traditional university. The targeted support for these important initiatives has allowed the University to achieve statewide leadership roles in these endeavors.
The Office of Academic Outreach, Continuing and Distance Education serves as a bridge between the student at a distance and the academic and administrative units of the university. The office respects and understands the unique demands of the lifelong learner and is committed to assuring quality, accessible programs and services. The office supports the university in maintaining its leadership role in the areas of distance and technology enhanced learning both in our region and beyond. The educational and economic development of the citizens of its service area is a focal point for the office. OCS partners with the academic and administrative units of the university to serve business, industry, the military, community colleges, and local school systems.
Since its inception in 1907, East Carolina has evolved from a teacher’s training school to a national research university. The student population has grown from 147 to over 26,000. The campus now includes more than 160 buildings. The university’s academic programs are housed in ten colleges and professional schools, including the Brody School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine.

Academic Outreach, Continuing and Distance Education can also help you market your distance education program. Each semester, we do a wide variety of general advertising meant to raise awareness of all distance education programs at ECU.
We maintain the "options" website – www.options.ecu.edu – which is the front door for many prospective online students. We can also help you design and distribute individualized marketing pieces for your particular program.
The Summer School at East Carolina University is an integral part of the academic year and is the equivalent of any one of the two semesters in respect to courses, their credit value, and the quality of instruction given. The university offers three schedules of summer classes: two five week terms and one eleven week session. The Office of Academic Outreach, Continuing and Distance Education administers Summer School payroll and issues contracts to faculty teaching in the Summer. The Continuing Professional Education section of the Office offers, among others, these major services: program design, development, and delivery; budget development; program website development and marketing; registration and fee collection; arrangements with speakers, hotels, and transportation agencies; multimedia and technology requirements; approval of continuing education units (CEUs) and issuing CEU certificates to interested participants; accounting, financial reporting, and recordkeeping; program evaluation; and program coordination.
