Second Life-

The 3D Virtual World

ECU has entered another life!  Second Life that is….the 3D virtual world which is gaining

popularity in the real world.   Academic Outreach
now has space available and instructors are using virtual world for  classes, office hours, and research. Other universities such as UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University have also embarked on this new and exciting method of teaching.  If you are interested in learning more about Second Life, please contact Sharon Collins(collinss@ecu.edu) or Travis Hufford (tjh0713@ecu.edu).

DE Student Feature
Meet Sarah Jane Benken~
Distance Education Student

My name is Sarah Benken and I am 25 years old, and a mother of a 10 year old.  I have worked my way through high school, community college and ECU as a single mother.  I have risen and fallen countless times, but my education was never an option of giving up.  I am a senior in the Business program and hope to jump right into the MBA program after graduating.  I stand for hard work and dedication! Currently I am an Accounting Manager for a large Contracting company in Durham, but have held other positions such as: General Business Manager and Subrogation Specialist. With over 9 years experience in a professional environment, I believe that higher education has helped me grow as a person and as a leader.

One could say that I am a true success by overcoming the odds of being a teenage mother.

AND, honestly, I could not have done it without the flexibility from the distance education program.

Distance Education Student Cards ~ A New Look

Distance Education Student Cards for Spring 2008 semester will be mailed to all distance education students, with a new look.  It will now include your ECU ID number (Banner ID) on your card, along with your signature.  The card will be included in letter form, and you will just detach it from the bottom of the letter.  You should receive your card by January 31st.   The Distance Education Student Card grants access to ECU computer labs and allows students to check out books from the ECU libraries.  Please note that the Distance Education Student Card will not provide access to the Student Recreation Center, Student Health Services, Athletic events and other activities that are available to on-campus students because DE students do not pay these additional university fees.  The Distance Education Student Cards are valid for one semester and are mailed to your home address.  If your address has changed, you will need to update your address through OneStop  https://onestop.ecu.edu/onestop/  in order to receive future cards.  Please contact Kim Wilson for replacement cards or if you have not received your card by January 31st at wilsonki@ecu.edu

A Message from the Student Services Staff of the Division of Continuing Studies

Welcome to the spring semester! If you haven’t visited recently, check out the Current Students section of the Options for Adult Learners website (www.options.ecu.edu).  You will find links for: tutorials on Piratemail and Blackboard (under “How to”); view links to department websites, academic resources and administrative offices (including Joyner Library, Financial Aid and the Registrar’s Office) plus other helpful information. Be sure to check the Academic Calendars for important dates.  Check the website frequently as we are always revising it to include helpful information for distance education students.

Fall semester produced a record number of over 5,000 students enrolled in over 60 degree and certificate programs at ECU.  Fall semester also presented a new option for paying your tuition bill. Beginning with fall 2007 payments, ECU implemented an online payment system through OneStop allowing distance education students the convenience of paying tuition online. You no longer have to worry about busy phone lines or the hassle of getting your payment in the mail on time. 24 hours a day, seven days a week you have a safe and secure method of paying your tuition bill.  Did you pay online this semester? If not, try it out this summer or fall and see just how easy and convenient it really is.

In closing, watch your Piratemail account for frequent updates and reminders from the Division of Continuing Studies. Throughout the semester we’ll send information to your email account about registration, tuition and other important information.  Please feel free to contact us anytime you have a question or problem arise.  Have a great semester!

Synergy, Student Organization of Joyner Library

Interested in being part of a campus organization, but unsure how a Distance Education student can participate in an on-campus organization?  Synergy may be the organization for you.  Synergy is the student organization affiliated with Joyner Library here at ECU. The goal of Synergy is to fuse the voices of the students with the mission of Joyner Library.   As a DE student, you can become actively involved in Synergy, regardless of your physical location.  You can help shape the selection of electronic resources, evaluate the library’s interface, and provide feedback to the library executive body.  You can also participate in Synergy’s outreach division through volunteering in your local library or school’s media center. If you are a DE student within driving distance to ECU campus, you are more than welcome to attend Synergy’s meetings.  For more information or to receive Synergy’s newsletter, please contact Brittany Smith at Synergy@ecu.edu .
