Why did you choose to attend East Carolina University?

I originally chose to attend ECU because I wanted to go into forensic science and ECU is one of the only schools in North Carolina with any kind of forensics program, although it is only a minor.

What has your scholarship enabled you to do?

My scholarship has enabled me to do many wonderful things, but perhaps the greatest thing was my semester abroad in Finland. This was one of the best experiences of my life and I really enjoyed being able to experience another culture. I was able to befriend people from all over the world and travel throughout Scandinavia and parts of Germany.

What special undergraduate research opportunities have you experienced at the university?

I am currently doing research in the Chemistry department under the direction of Dr. Andrew Morehead. This experience has helped me develop many different laboratory techniques, as well as stay abreast of current happenings in the chemistry field.

What unique leadership opportunities have you experienced at the university?

I have been very active in the Pirate Tutoring Center since my freshmen year. I have enjoyed helping students better understand their chemistry classes. I have also helped with fundraising opportunities for the Pre-Pharmacy Club as well as helped with international student orientation. This semester I will be taking a class so that I can be a chemistry lab teaching assistant, which will further my leadership abilities.

What are your career plans/aspirations?

I aspire to attend pharmacy school at UNC Chapel Hill. I plan to apply in the Fall of 2011. I am currently working as an intern at Medical Park Pharmacy West where I have learned a lot about retail pharmacy. I have also had the opportunity to do some compounding work in the pharmacy, which I find very interesting.

How have you made a positive impact while you have been at East Carolina University?

I believe that my work as a tutor has helped many people do better in classes and feel more confident about their own abilities. In the long run, this will help ECU's retention rate, and boost our reputation as a competitive university.
