EC Scholars Class of 2012

Emily Anne Zaruba

Hometown/State: Pleasant Garden, North Carolina

Incoming EC Scholar Class (year): 2008

Scholarship(s) Awarded: Robert G. and Amy W. Brinkley EC Scholars Award; Mount Vernon Realty EC Scholars Award

Major/Intended Major: Music Education

Why did you choose to attend East Carolina University?

ECU offered me everything I was looking for in a university- a large school with a small school feel, a football team and a marching band, and most importantly, an excellent School of Music with a wonderful faculty.

What has your scholarship enabled you to do?

My scholarship has allowed me to focus on my schoolwork without needing to worry about paying for school or graduating with debt. I can devote my time to practicing and studying because I don't have to work to put myself through school.

What unique leadership opportunities have you experienced at the university?

I've been able to lead my section in the marching band and symphonic band. I'm also a member of CMENC, and am currently in a program where music majors mentor high school juniors and seniors considering majoring in music.

What are your career plans/aspirations?

I want to teach General Music at a K-5 school. I would really like to work in an underprivileged school district where I could build and better the music program through grant writing, as well as my teaching.

How have you made a positive impact while you have been at East Carolina University?

Through Service-Learning opportunities I have been able to tutor at Belvoir Elementary School, provide music education through the Kid's Music program, and provide childcare at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.
